About Soft17

Last updated: July 2026

Soft17 is an independent blackjack training app with one goal: getting basic strategy out of a chart and into your reflexes. This page explains who builds it, where the numbers come from, and how the training method works.

What Soft17 is

A trainer, not a casino. Soft17 teaches the mathematically optimal way to play blackjack — the free 8-chapter course explains every decision, the free chart lists all 340 correct moves, and the practice modes turn them into automatic reflexes. Everything runs on virtual hands: there is no real-money play, no wagering and no gambling service of any kind.

Who builds it

Soft17 is built and maintained by an independent developer as a focused, single-purpose product. There is no content farm behind it: every lesson, chart cell and explanation is generated from one strategy engine and reviewed by hand. Questions, corrections and bug reports go straight to the person who wrote the code — support@soft17.app.

Where the numbers come from

Every cell of the strategy chart is produced by a single tested rules engine covering 340 player/dealer combinations and the common rule variants (deck count, S17/H17, DAS, surrender, ENHC). House-edge figures follow the published Wizard of Odds calculations, and the card-counting deviations in the course use the standard Schlesinger Hi-Lo numbers. The engine ships with an automated test suite that runs on every release, and the chart page shows the date it was last verified.

The training method

Reading a chart doesn't make you play it correctly under pressure — repetition does. Soft17 uses the SM-2 spaced-repetition algorithm to track every mistake you make and schedule it back exactly when you're about to forget it, plus targeted modes for your statistically weakest hands. The goal is simple: zero mistakes at the table.

Play responsibly

Basic strategy minimizes the house edge; it does not eliminate it. Blackjack remains a negative-expectation game for the player everywhere outside specific advantage-play situations. Soft17 teaches the math — it never encourages gambling, accepts no wagers and is intended for adults. If gambling stops being fun, seek help through your local support services.
