Lesson 5 · The Moves

Surrender — Giving Up

Surrender (late surrender) lets you fold your hand and recover half your bet. It is not always available.

Use it only in desperate situations: when the probability of losing is so high that surrendering half is the most profitable move.

Examples

Hard 16 vs 10
6♥6♥6
Q♠Q♠Q
YOU
VS
J♣J♣J
DEALER
✓ Surrender

You have 16, dealer shows 10. Surrender — you lose less by giving up half.

Hard 15 vs 10
6♦6♦6
9♥9♥9
YOU
VS
10♥10♥10
DEALER
✓ Surrender

You have 15, dealer shows 10. Surrender — same logic: you lose less.

Common mistake

Never surrendering on principle. Giving up half the bet on 16 vs 10 saves money versus playing it out — refusing 'to fight' costs real expected value.

Guided practice

Try 5 hands from the category you just studied before the quiz.
