Lesson 2 · Hard Totals

Hard 9-11 — The Double Zone

With 9, 10 or 11 you should think about doubling. These totals start from a strong base and a 10-value card takes you to 19-21.

Hard 10 and 11 double vs almost everything. Hard 9 is more selective.

Examples

✓ Double

Double Down — even vs 9, your 10 has a high chance of becoming 20.

Hard 11 vs A
2♦2♦2
9♠9♠9
YOU
VS
A♠A♠A
DEALER
✓ Hit

In S17: Hit (not double). The dealer's ace is too strong.

Hard 9 vs 2
2♦2♦2
7♣7♣7
YOU
VS
2♠2♠2
DEALER
✓ Hit

Hit — vs 2 the double advantage is not sufficient.

Common mistake

Hitting 11 against a 10 instead of doubling. Eleven is the best doubling hand in the game: one card from 21 with maximum money on the table.
