Lesson 3 · Hard Totals

Hard 12-14 — The Critical Zone

These hands are tricky: you can bust by drawing, but the dealer might not bust. The decision depends on the dealer's card.

Rule: stand vs dealer 4-6 (weak dealer), hit vs everything else.

Examples

Hard 13 vs 6

Q♥Q♥Q
YOU
VS
6♥6♥6

✓ Stand

Stand — the dealer busts 42% of the time with 6. Wait it out.

Hard 12 vs 2

VS
2♣2♣2
DEALER
✓ Hit

Hit — vs 2 the dealer only busts 35%, not enough to stand with 12.

Hard 14 vs 7
6♥6♥6
8♦8♦8
YOU
VS
7♦7♦7
DEALER
✓ Hit

Hit — dealer with 7 often makes 17. Your 14 can't compete.

Common mistake

Standing 12 against a 2 or 3 'because 12 is weak'. The correct split is: hit against 2-3, stand against 4-6 — the most misremembered row of the chart.
