Lesson 2 · Soft Totals

Soft 17 — The Confusing Case

A,6 = soft 17. Even though it 'is 17', do NOT stand on soft 17 — you can improve without busting immediately.

Soft 17 is counterintuitive: it looks like a good total already, but it's always better to try to improve.

Examples

S17 vs 3

VS

DEALER
✓ Double

Double Down — weak dealer, soft 17 can become 27 (ace→1) so you can't bust.

S17 vs 7

7♣7♣7
DEALER
✓ Hit

Hit — vs a strong dealer, try to improve.

Common mistake

Treating soft 17 as 'a made 17'. Standing is never correct: it's a double against 3-6 and a hit everywhere else — 17 only wins when the dealer busts.
