Lesson 3 · Soft Totals

Soft 18 — The Deceptive Hand

A,7 = soft 18. Looks strong, but vs a strong dealer (9, 10, A) it is weaker than you think.

Soft 18 is the trickiest hand in the chapter: you stand, hit, or double depending on the dealer.

Examples

VS
2♥2♥2
DEALER
✓ Double

Double/Stand — vs 2 doubling is marginally better (Ds).

S18 vs 9
A♦A♦A
7♠7♠7
YOU
VS
9♥9♥9
DEALER
✓ Hit

Hit — the dealer often makes 19, you need to try to improve.

S18 vs 7
A♦A♦A
7♣7♣7
YOU
VS
7♥7♥7
DEALER
✓ Stand

Stand — 18 beats the dealer's 17, and the dealer makes 17 often with 7.

Common mistake

Standing soft 18 against a 9, 10 or ace — the most misplayed hand in blackjack. Eighteen loses to a made 19-20 too often: the correct play is hit.
