Lesson 2 · Surrender & Rules

H17 vs S17

S17 (dealer stands on soft 17) vs H17 (dealer hits on soft 17). In H17 the dealer has a slightly higher edge.

H17 changes some decisions: H11 vs A becomes Double, S18 vs A becomes Hit, H17 vs A can become Surrender.

Examples

H11 vs A in S17
2♦2♦2
9♠9♠9
YOU
VS
A♠A♠A
DEALER
✓ Hit

Hit — do not double in S17.

DEALER
✓ Double

Double Down — the dealer also hits on soft 17, making the risk slightly higher, so you double.

Common mistake

Assuming every table plays the same rules. When the dealer hits soft 17, plays flip — 11 against an ace turns from hit into double. Read the placard before you sit.
